In the Royal Navy, data can come from various sources in assorted structures, even if they are semantically linked. For example, an Excel spreadsheet containing platform data could be linked to a database containing inventory data. As a high level decision maker, it would be very difficult (not to mention time consuming) to cross reference the two. On top of that, reflecting that decision back into the spreadsheet and database can prove incredibly complicated.
Kraken uses Palantir’s tech stack, Foundry – a sophisticated data ingestion, processing and analysis platform that solves all of the above issues. In Foundry, you can homogenise your data such that it becomes essentially source agnostic. In addition, it provides ample solutions for digital transformations to clean, filter and apply security features to any data set.
The true power of Foundry lies in its ability to facilitate the creation of high level applications such that a decision maker (say a Sea Lord) can view, in one place, everything they need to support their fleet.
Kraken has released many salient applications that have positively impacted the Navy’s ability to support its resources across all departments. In aerial support, we have developed apps to determine helicopter availability and aircraft maintenance tasks. In Strategic planning, we have developed workflows that allow high ranking users to make budget related decisions focusing on Navel capabilities. In total, there are 500+ applications developed by a mixture of users and developers, owing to the engineering and analysis capabilities of Kraken.
