MIDAS

Service Design & User Experience

Overview.

Management Information & Data Analytics Service (MIDAS) is a Royal Navy digital transformation project with the objective of creating a centralised, single-source data dashboard for all supplier performance data. Until recently, suppliers to the Royal Navy privately owned the data that measured their own performance. If the Royal Navy wanted to assess how well a supplier was meeting its contractual agreements, they would have to ask the supplier for data, posing a significant conflict of interest.

The Challenge.

Digi2al were tasked with conducting a discovery that focused initially on Portsmouth Naval Base, which would inform delivery of the service to Live.

The Solution

Our team interviewed users and iterated prototype digital dashboards. During this process, we gathered 1000s of KPIs, sorted through which were most relevant, and presented them digitally in a user-friendly way. Through Alpha and Beta, our team identified a number of technical and commercial constraints, working with others to identify ways to mitigate these in ways that were both practical and fair.

The Results.

MIDAS users are now able to quickly identify performance issues across the entire contract from a single dashboard, enabling better decision making. Described as ‘transformational’ by users, with £22bn in contracts currently under its remit, MIDAS is increasing accountability with suppliers, making significant savings (£1.78bn), and delivering greater value to taxpayers.
