Digi2al was tasked with building out the R2D2 service, prioritising an understanding of the relative priority of operational capability risks within the defence landscape.
The service needed to be hosted at SECRET to support the Capability Readiness Assessment Framework (CRAF) – a process used to understand and manage the risks each Top Level Budget Holder (TLBH) faces in meeting their readiness commitments.
Digi2al assembled a User Centred Design (UCD) Product team to conduct a series of user research sessions. These sessions took the form of interviews and prototype tests and were designed to understand how risk is reported by each TLBH. Feedback from the sessions was fed into the team's fortnightly development sprints and continuously iterated on to deliver a product that evolved with user needs.
The UCD Product team also conducted regular Show & Tell demos with key stakeholders after each sprint to demonstrate the applications functioning and alignment with user needs. Understanding these needs, and collaborating with key stakeholders from the Army, Navy, UK Stratcom and RAF was key to driving the agile process and delivering the right product values across the project.
As part of the rollout plan, Digi2al ran a series of training sessions with users, using the R2D2 application as a test environment for training, debugging and change management. The training sessions started as observed 1-2-1 sessions, with a small subset of users going through the training material, and were then released to the wider audience as a self-led training guide.
R2D2 was successfully deployed to Secret on time. It was first used by the Navy in a readiness review, which was chaired by the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff for Operations and Commitments. R2D2 continues to support readiness reviews, and we are expanding the features to enrich readiness assessments.
